fo:Factory is an advanced formatting assistant for performing large batch formatting operations against the RenderX XEP Server. The interface of fo:Factory exposes all the underlying functionality in the RenderX XEP Server, allowing one
to change any and all configuration parameters such as compression, validation, PDF security, etc., for each production run. Logging of the process is also configurable. Choose from no logging, various levels of warnings and errors, to a full output of all messaging including timing for each transformation step.

The initial Beta release allows for formatting of a directory of XML files against a single stylesheet as well as creating a "virtual" space for selecting various XML files and associated stylesheets to create a production run. Future plans for integrating a database query into the application will provide for a full production environment from files and databases.
The "state" of the input files can be saved in a simple XML file.
This allows one to recall jobs at any time and re-run them -- perhaps with new data or changed templates. And this powerful feature will be expanded in the future through integration into a
scheduler so fo:Factory jobs may be run at any time. |
fo:Factory is designed to allow for easy integration of various advanced features for processing. Since it is based on the RenderX
XEP Server, of course PDF and PostScript (and AFP if licensed separately from RenderX) are all output options. You can also output various intermediate steps such as XSL FO and the internal XEP format.
fo:Factory also supports foActive <X>Styler templates so that the source XML files are
used as merged data sources and the <X>Styler template is the XSL.

Using this method, you can merge to WordML and output those files if you desire. fo:Factory
automatically converts the resulting WordML files
to PDF or PostScript using the RenderX XEP Server. RenderX is currently working on stylesheets for data merge and conversion to XSL FO from Adobe InDesign.
Because fo:Factory leverages the RenderX XEP Server intermediate format, it has some additional built-in functionality and plans are for more in this area.
Currently, you can concatenate the various input files into a single output stream.
fo:Factory allows you to do this while preserving such internal things as bookmarks so that one can build large output files with bookmarks from several input files. You can also apply watermark overlays to the content, all done without modifying the input source. A future module is planned for barcode application.
